Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan. Her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, was a school teacher and her mother, Toor Pekai Yousafzai, was a housewife. Yousafzai has two younger brothers, Khushal and Atal.
Yousafzai began speaking out for the rights of girls in 2009, when she was just 11 years old. She wrote a blog for the BBC Urdu service, in which she described the Taliban's ban on girls' education and the challenges that girls faced in trying to get an education.
In 2012, Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman. She was targeted because of her outspoken advocacy for the rights of girls. Yousafzai was flown to the United Kingdom for treatment, and she eventually recovered from her injuries.
After her recovery, Yousafzai continued to speak out for the rights of girls and women. She has given speeches at the United Nations and other international forums, and she has met with world leaders, including President Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron.
In 2014, Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. She is the youngest person to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
