Nielsen's writing is both poetic and unflinchingly honest, and she paints a vivid picture of the beauty and harshness of the African wilderness. She writes about the elephants that roam the land, the lions that hunt at night, and the hippos that wallow in the rivers. She also writes about the people of Africa, the villagers who welcomed her family into their community and the poachers who threatened the wildlife that they loved.
Black Elephants is a book about love, loss, and the power of nature. It is a story about a family who found their home in the African wilderness, and about the sacrifices they made to protect the animals they loved.

Excerpt
"I remember the first time I saw a black elephant. I was on a game drive with my husband, Ulrik, and our two young children. We were driving through a dense forest when we came across a herd of elephants. The elephants were all different sizes, from tiny calves to massive bulls. But one elephant stood out from the rest. It was a large bull elephant, and its skin was as black as night.
I had never seen a black elephant before. I asked Ulrik what it was, and he told me that it was a rare form of elephant called a black elephant. Black elephants are not albino elephants. Their skin is black because of a genetic mutation.
The black elephant stood out from the rest of the herd. It was like a shadow moving through the forest. I watched it for a long time, and I felt a strange connection to it. I knew that I would never forget that elephant."
