John McCloy was born in Philadelphia in 1895. He graduated from Amherst College and Harvard Law School. After practicing law in New York City, he entered government service in 1940. McCloy played a major role in the mobilization of American industry for World War II. He also helped to negotiate the surrender of Germany in 1945.
After the war, McCloy served as High Commissioner for Germany. He was responsible for overseeing the reconstruction of Germany and the establishment of a democratic government. McCloy also played a key role in the development of the Marshall Plan.
In 1949, McCloy was appointed President of the World Bank. He served in this position until 1963. During his tenure, the World Bank provided billions of dollars in loans to developing countries. McCloy also helped to establish the International Finance Corporation.
McCloy was a close advisor to presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson. He played a key role in the development of American foreign policy during the Cold War. McCloy was also a strong advocate for civil rights and international cooperation.
John McCloy died in 1989. He was 94 years old. He is considered one of the most influential figures in American history.
