Behrendt arrived in China in 1989, just months before the protests began. She was immediately struck by the country's beauty and the warmth of its people. However, she also began to notice the growing discontent among the Chinese people, who were tired of living under a repressive government.
As the protests grew in size and intensity, Behrendt found herself drawn into the movement. She attended rallies, helped to build barricades, and even risked her own safety to protect the students. She was inspired by the courage and determination of the protesters, and she believed that they were fighting for a just cause.
However, the protests were brutally crushed by the government, and many of the protesters were killed or injured. Behrendt was heartbroken by the violence, but she was also proud of the role that she had played in the movement. She returned to Australia a changed woman, with a new understanding of the world and a deep commitment to social justice.
Australian Bush to Tiananmen Square is a powerful and moving memoir that tells the story of a young woman's journey of culture, courage, and compassion. Behrendt's writing is clear and engaging, and her story is both heartbreaking and inspiring. This is a book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
Here are a few of the things that I found most compelling about Australian Bush to Tiananmen Square:
- Behrendt's vivid descriptions of China and its people. I felt like I was right there with her as she traveled through the country and experienced the protests firsthand.
- Behrendt's honesty and vulnerability. She doesn't shy away from sharing her own doubts and fears, and she gives a real sense of what it was like to be a young woman caught in the middle of a political crisis.
- Behrendt's message of hope. Despite the tragedy of the Tiananmen Square protests, Behrendt's story is ultimately a hopeful one. She shows us that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for a better future.
I highly recommend Australian Bush to Tiananmen Square to anyone who is interested in Chinese history, the Tiananmen Square protests, or simply a good story about courage and compassion. This is a book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
