Kal Penn is an actor, activist, and former White House staffer. He is best known for his roles in the Harold & Kumar film series, Designated Survivor, and Clarice. Penn is also a vocal advocate for progressive causes, and he served as a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities under President Barack Obama.
In his new book, You Can Be Serious Kal Penn, Penn shares his inspiring and often hilarious story of growing up as a first-generation Indian American in a conservative town, navigating Hollywood, and finding his true calling in public service.
Penn begins his book with a vivid description of his childhood in New Jersey. He was raised by immigrant parents who worked hard to provide for their family. Penn's father was a scientist and his mother was a stay-at-home mom. Penn recalls that he was always a bit of an outsider growing up. He was the only Indian American kid in his school, and he often felt like he didn't belong.
Despite the challenges he faced, Penn excelled in school. He was a good student and he was active in extracurricular activities. Penn was also a talented actor, and he performed in several school plays.
After graduating from high school, Penn attended the University of California, Los Angeles. He majored in theater and film, and he continued to pursue his acting career. Penn landed his first major role in the 2004 film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.
The Harold & Kumar film series was a huge success, and it made Penn a star. He went on to star in several other films, including The Namesake, The Big Short, and Designated Survivor.
In addition to his acting career, Penn is also a passionate activist. He is a vocal advocate for progressive causes, and he has worked with several organizations to promote social justice.
In 2009, Penn was appointed to the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. He served on the committee for two years, and he helped to promote arts education and access to the arts for all Americans.
Penn's new book, You Can Be Serious Kal Penn, is a powerful and inspiring memoir. It is a story of identity, ambition, and freedom. Penn's story is a reminder that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
