The Fight for Civil Rights

In the 1940s, Smith became involved in the civil rights movement. He was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP),and he worked to end segregation and discrimination. Smith was also a vocal opponent of the Ku Klux Klan. In 1948, he helped to organize a group of black self-defense fighters who protected black voters from Klan violence.

Smith's work for civil rights was not without risk. He was arrested several times, and he was even threatened with death. However, he never gave up on his dream of a more just and equitable society.

The Founding of Central State University

In 1943, Smith founded Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. Central State was one of the first black colleges in the United States. Smith's goal was to create a university that would provide black students with a quality education and prepare them for leadership roles in society.

Smith served as the president of Central State for 25 years. During his tenure, the university grew and prospered. Smith also established several new programs at Central State, including a graduate school, a law school, and a medical school.

Business Success

In addition to his work in education and civil rights, Smith was also a successful businessman. He owned several businesses, including a construction company, a real estate company, and a bank. Smith used his business success to support his work for civil rights and education.

Legacy

Wendell Smith died in 1992. He was 82 years old. Smith left behind a legacy of achievement and service. He was a pioneer in the field of education, a civil rights activist, and a successful businessman. His story is one that should be told and retold for generations to come.
