The St. Louis Steaming Away From Hamburg, Germany, In 1939. To Hope And Back: The Journey Of The St Louis (A Holocaust Rembrance For Young Readers 10)

In May 1939, the St. Louis, a German ocean liner, set sail from Hamburg, Germany, bound for Havana, Cuba. On board were 937 Jewish refugees, fleeing Nazi persecution. They had Free Downloadd visas from the Cuban government, and they believed that they would soon be safe in a new land.

But the St. Louis never reached Havana. When the ship arrived off the coast of Cuba, the Cuban government refused to allow the refugees to disembark. The ship was forced to turn around and sail back to Europe.

The passengers of the St. Louis were desperate. They had nowhere to go. They were stranded at sea, with no hope of finding a safe haven.

The St. Louis sailed from port to port, but no country would allow the refugees to enter. The passengers were becoming increasingly ill and desperate.

Finally, after two months at sea, the St. Louis was forced to return to Europe. The passengers were disembarked in Antwerp, Belgium, and then sent to various countries throughout Europe.

Many of the passengers of the St. Louis eventually made it to safety. But hundreds of them were killed in the Holocaust.

The story of the St. Louis is a harrowing and inspiring true story about the plight of Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. It is a story that we must never forget.
