Bojs begins her story with the first Homo sapiens who arrived in Europe from Africa around 45,000 years ago. These early humans were small and nomadic, and they lived in a cold and harsh environment. Over time, however, they adapted to their new surroundings and began to develop their own unique culture and technology.
Around 10,000 years ago, the climate in Europe began to warm, and the glaciers that had covered much of the continent began to recede. This allowed for the development of agriculture, and humans began to settle down in permanent villages. This led to a population explosion, and the human population of Europe grew from around 1 million to 10 million in just a few thousand years.
The rise of agriculture also led to the development of social inequality. The people who owned the land and the animals became wealthier and more powerful than those who did not. This led to the development of social hierarchies and the emergence of the first states.
In the centuries that followed, Europe was home to a number of powerful empires, including the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Holy Roman Empire. These empires were responsible for some of the greatest achievements of human civilization, including the development of written language, the invention of the wheel, and the construction of some of the world's most iconic buildings.
However, Europe was also home to some of the darkest chapters in human history. The continent was ravaged by wars, plagues, and famines. In the 20th century, Europe was the site of two world wars, which resulted in the deaths of millions of people.
Despite its turbulent history, Europe remains a vibrant and diverse continent, home to some of the world's most developed countries and some of its oldest cultures. My European Family is a fascinating and informative journey through the history of this remarkable continent.
