Early life and career

Chris Marker was born Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve on July 29, 1921, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne before turning to filmmaking in the late 1940s. His early films were short documentaries that explored the lives of ordinary people in Paris. In 1952, he released his first feature film, Olympia 52, a documentary about the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki.
