Early life and career
Chris Marker was born Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve on July 29, 1921, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne before turning to filmmaking in the late 1940s. His early films were short documentaries that explored the lives of ordinary people in Paris. In 1952, he released his first feature film, Olympia 52, a documentary about the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it established Marker as a major figure in French cinema.
The "Left Bank" group
In the early 1950s, Marker became a member of the "Left Bank" group, a loose association of filmmakers, writers, and artists who shared a commitment to political and social engagement. In 1957, he released Letter from Siberia, a documentary about his travels in the Soviet Union. The film was critical of the Soviet government, and it was banned in the USSR.

His films from this period often featured found footage, archival material, and a non-linear narrative style.
