Septima Poinsette Clark was a civil rights icon who dedicated her life to fighting for equality and justice. Born in 1898 in South Carolina, Clark was the daughter of former slaves. She grew up in poverty, but she was determined to make a difference in the world.
Clark began her career as a teacher in the 1920s. She quickly realized that the education system was failing African Americans. She fought to improve the quality of education for black children, and she also worked to register African Americans to vote.
In 1955, Clark played a key role in the Montgomery bus boycott. She helped to organize the boycott and she was one of the leaders who negotiated with the city to end segregation on buses. The Montgomery bus boycott was a major victory for the civil rights movement, and it helped to spark the movement's growth.
Clark continued to work for civil rights throughout her life. She was a leader in the March on Washington in 1963, and she continued to fight for equality and justice until her death in 1987.
